Steve Austin Speaks on Hulk Hogan, Retirement and More

Posted by Marc Middleton on Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

- In an interview with WWE Magazine’s special 2010 WrestleMania 26 Almanac, WWE Hall of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin says he still has no interest in fighting Hulk Hogan, despite WWE’s repeated attempts to make the match happen at the past few WrestleManias.

“After I retired, for two or three years, they asked me, ‘Do you want to wrestle Hogan this year? Do you want to wrestle Hogan? And the answer is: No, I don’t. “I don’t care to wrestle Hulk Hogan. I don’t think it would live up to fans’s expectations.”

Austin says his match with Dwayne “The Rock” Dwayne Johnson at WrestleMania 19 in 2003 was his “retirement match.” Austin isn’t looking for one last rematch, because he doesn’t think it could be as good as their past classics.

“That was my last match, and I’m not looking for a re-match. I don’t it would be as good as what we’ve done before because we’ve both been out of the ring for some time. Could it be done? Of course. But there’s no use talking about it. … I definitely do not have any interest in delivering anything that would be second-best to what I’ve done before.”

When asked about his favorite WrestleMania match, Austin his WrestleMania 17 main event match against The Rock, but admits that turning heel and aligning himself with Mr. McMahon that night was a bad idea looking back.

“Looking back, it wasn’t the best thing we ever did,” Austin said. “Now, if I could go back, as soon as that match ended, when Vince walked up to me, I would have shaken his hand and said, ‘Watch the Stunner,’ and dropped him right there in the middle of the ring. That’s hindsight being 20/20!”

And he didn’t like turning heel….. I didn’t think he liked that anyway. That was when Wrestling was worth something.

Stone Cold’s act got real old after awhile, but at least he seems like a pretty stand up guy, at least as far as wrestling is concerned. Unlike a Hogan or a Flair, who haven’t been able to wrestle at a decent level for YEARS, but still insist, after multiple “retirements”, on getting back i the ring, so people can watch their wrinkly a$$es stumble about and hit two or three moves.

Sorry, those guys are legends. They were THE guys of the 1980s, for sure. But that was the 80s. This is 2010.

This is why Stone Cold is my favorite wrestler ever. He knows if he can’t give an A+ performance in the ring, he won’t do it.

Dill, give it up dude! Devil_Rising has the most annoying opinions 99% of the time, but at least he uses his skewed view of facts to back it up. “Your momma got old.” Really? C’mon man at least bring something intelligent to the table. Or try to be like devil and say something you think might sound intelligent.

Hey Big T, thanks for nominating me “the most annoying 99% of the time”. Why is that? Because you don’t happen to agree with what I say? Please.

Yeah, Stone Cold DID get old, and that’s a fact. Why? Because the entire damned show was all based around him, the Rock, and their silly antics. And DX. Just the same as Raw, now, is based around Cena, DX, and their silly antics. It gets old. There were, and are, a LOT of other wrestlers who deserve matches and face time, people that fans like myself actually want to see, instead of another “Stone Cold sprays people with a hose, drinks beer, and gives people stunners” segment. Those DID get very old. It’s pretty sad when that beer truck segment was rated by WWE one of the best of all time, in place of….oh I don’t know…an ACTUAL MATCH?

Like I’ve said before, I’m fan of the actual WRESTLING, not 90% of the incredibly lame storylines that WWE’s writers come up with. For example, I’m a huge Edge fan, and somehow managed to REMAIN an Edge fan throughout all of that incredibly stupid and quite frankly disgusting Vickie Guerrero business…which was wrong on so many levels it’s not funny.

But thanks for saying that I’m trying to sound intelligent. At least I guess you give me a backhanded “compliment”, right? Perhaps if YOU learned to simply disagree with people, and not just insult them because you don’t like what they have to say, YOU would sound a bit more intelligent yourself?

Well, perhaps you’re the most annoying because you have this perverse habit of beating the proverbial dead horse into the ground. The spelling and grammar mistakes of everyone else that posts here pale in comparison to your rants. Sorry, that’s just how it is.

On a different note, I’m glad that Austin recognizes his limitations and places the quality of his work before a paycheck. There’s too many people out there that will take the money and vomit up some half-arsed, third- or fourth-rate appearance and then take offense when called on their greed and indifference.

Well Brody, then perhaps you can take the advice I gave to good ol “Dillberg”. Don’t read my comments then, if you don’t like them. If you have such a small attention span that you can’t be bothered to read comments that are more than a few sentences long, that’s your problem. Not mine.

And wasting your time telling me you don’t like my comments, or telling me they’re too long, instead of actually trying to engage in conversation, again, is your problem, not mine. And a total waste of your time.

Sorry, that’s just how it is.

Are you implying that Cena is somehow able to make up for The Rock, and Stone Cold at the same time? Because.. that’s what i’m reading here. The reason the current product is old, is because Cena hasn’t been entertaining since he used to rap. The Rock & Stone cold would be able to be entertaining by having a staring contest… cena has to resort to occasionally raising his voice at people, and even then, he gets a few cheers from kids, and everyone else going “Here we go again, Cena’s been drinking PowerThirst”…

While it may have revolved around Stone Cole and the Rock… let’s remember that these two let guys such as Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho, and Brock Lesnar take the mainevent away from them on numerous occasions. STCA and The Rock helped the young guns grow into FULLTIME maineventers.

Tell me one guy Cena or HHH have given a chance to let blossom

Have to agree with Devil rising about Austin. Anyone remember in 2001 when Old Stone Cold Stunned the entire W.C.W. Roster in the ring one right after the other!! I mean like freaking 20 to 22 guys!! Give me a Freaking break!! “STONE COLD!! STONE COLD!! STONE COLD!!!!” Freaking lame.

It’s great to see stone cold once again tell it like it is. We all know he couldn’t [erform like he used to. His body is too shot through.
Best thing he can do is maybe host Raw. Have a couple of cold one’s, hand out a few stunners and get a few hell yeah’s!!

And may I remind a few people. There are possibly 4 maybe 5 guys who pulled WWE through the monday night wars.
HBK, HHH, Undertaker, The Rock and lastly Stone Cold Steve Austin!!!
