Jim Ross on Title Unifications, SmackDown Being Live, Sgt. Slaughter, and more

Jim Ross has a new blog entry up. Highlights are below.

On Sgt. Slaughter being hospitalized: “After our Legends of Wrestling Roundtable taping on Wednesday night Sgt Slaughter was hospitalized in Stamford after becoming ‘light headed.’ The cause of Sarge’s discomfort was low blood level which was addressed and he should be good to go as I write this. Sarge was in great spirits Wednesday night after receiving medical care but was kept overnight for observation which is the norm for a matter such as this. Bottom line is that the WWE Hall of Famer will be fine after a few scary moments. “

On Title Unifications: “I’m a proponent of unifying titles in pro wresting. Too many titles waters down the product in my view. When decision makers were still wrestling they would often create meaningless titles to appease egocentric performers or to enhance their own egos.”

On working with the Oklahoma football: “Thursday’s ‘Daily Oklahoman’ newspaper, www.oknews.com, featured a photo of yours truly on the front page of the sports section regarding the Oklahoma football announcing position that will be vacated when the legendary Bob Barry, Sr retires after this school year. Many have jumped the gun on speculation on this matter. Don’t think that I wouldn’t love to have that personal, dream job which is one that I’ve embraced for years but the process to replace the man who will always be the voice of OU football has not commenced. No matter who is hired I will always be a Sooner fanatic and still plan on attending every game, home and away, for the foreseeable future. This will be a coveted role for any broadcaster who has college football in their DNA. BTW I first listened to Bob Barry, Sr broadcast when I was 9 years old on a small, transistor radio long before the days of ESPN and virtually every Sooner game being televised. I am a product of a radio generation and guys like Jack Buck, Harry Caray, and Larry Munson have always influenced my work and ability to tell a compelling story. “

On Smackdown being live: “Others have asked if WWE would do better if Friday Night Smackdown was always a ‘live’ show. I don’t have a definitive answer but my thoughts are probably not. This assumption is based on the fact that too much credence is put on internet ‘spoiler’ information making the viewing decision for the fan. I think that the internet, although a vital aspect of information flow, still has such a small audience when compared to the entire TV universe that it has minimal affect to the casual, TV viewer. If the programming is compelling and episodically produced, folks will do all they can to either watch it as it airs or via DVR, etc.”

I agree about the title unifications as well. I’ve always thought having 2 World Titles took away the importance of it. I mean when a title change happens, who cares? There’s another world title.

But the problem is the new titles will probably look as god awful as the new tag belts. Ugh..

Honestly, Treg, I think WWE will put some thought into these titles (at least I’m hoping so). As long as they rid themselves of that horrible ‘spinner’ belt, I don’t give a damn what it looks like. It could be pink and it would be better than the ‘spinner’.

My only conflict is if they do unify all the titles then some guys just wont get the push they deserve, like if there was no U.S title then they would have had to decide rather they gave the I.C. belt to Miz or McIntytre and someone wouldnt have gotten the title push. same thing with the world titles. they would have had to choose between Shaemus and Kane.

i think they should put it like this

    Diva’s
    Tag titles
the raw one becomes the new IC/US title
and the smackdown is the world heavyweight

Here’s the thing it can potentially water down the product but, but you figure since the brads spit there are no ways for the younger guys to make a face other than lower and mid card matches. The European and the lightweight belts were great for these kids coming in….it also made a PPV that was worth watching.

They should keep the world titles and get rid of the midcard belts.

If they unify all the belts..they should unify the shows too. Ive been tired of separate shows, for too long. I thought it was ridiculous that they had separate PPV a while ago.

keep the US & IC titles separate so that each show still has a “champion” but there should be only 1 World Champ.

unify all the titles except the us and ic title, and make the us title be a third tier title like the european title once was. it’s funny for even giving this suggestion cause the WWE has it’s own mind made up already. it’ll be interesting to see what happens come march/april, i think that’s when we’ll see what changes will happen to the titles and the brands.
