Former WWE Star Bastion Booger Passes Away

Posted by Daniel Pena on Sunday, September 12th, 2010

Mike Shaw, who performed under a variety of names including Makhan Singh, Norman the Lunatic and in World Wrestling Entertainment as Bastion Booger, died of a heart attack on Saturday, confirms SLAM! Wrestling. He was 53.

After working the ranks of Stu Hart’s Stampede Wrestling promotion in Calgary, Alberta for numerous years, Shaw gained national recognition in the early nineties with World Championship Wrestling as the lovable, child-like character Norman the Lunatic. However, he is best known for his WWE role as Bastion Booger, which saw him portray a repugnantly obese man who wrestled in dingy grey singlets tailored to give him the appearance of a hunchback.

As the Booger character, Shaw felt his career ended on a negative, especially considering that the bulk of his greatest work was never seen on a national scale. He revealed his unhappiness with the gimmick in a 1998 interview with Scott Teal of the Whatever Happened To… newsletter.

“I think the Booger character would have worked if it got over as a heel, but my heart wasn’t into it,” Shaw disclosed to Teal. “I didn’t like the character. I didn’t like the outfit. Don’t get me wrong. I was happy to be in the WWF. It was something I wanted to do my whole career. I made a good living there.”

Shaw resided in Michigan after retiring from professional wrestling but still made occasional appearances at independent shows and conventions.

He was a Friar in WWE at one time as well! I watched Mike Shaw for years on Stampede Wrestling (The Harts’ Canadian wrestling show). He was hilarious on the mic. He formed a decent tag team with his “brother” Gary Albright (of UWF and All Japan fame). I loved the Bastion Booger character. Rest in peace, Mike.

I thought the Bastion Booger character was kinda funny and I too remember his feud with Doink and Bastion teaming with Bam Bam Bigelow (RIP) and the Headshrinkers against the Four Doinks (AKA Men on A Mission and The Bushwhackers) at Survivor Series ’93.

It’s unfortunate that the wrestling world has lost yet another member. RIP Mike Shaw aka Bastion Booger

I still remember him as a face named “Klondike Mike” back in All Star Wrestling in Vancouver BC in the late 70s/early 80s.Him and a young up and comer by the name of Dino Bravo were tag champs in that promotion.I still remember when they were promoting his character before he even arrived there. “Master Sgt.”Al Tomko came out for a promotional interview and said he had someone coming down from the Yukon to stir things up with the heels of the promotion at the time(sorry,I forgot who they were.).Tomko said that when he phoned Mike up,that he was ripping tree trunks out of the ground with his barehands and then showed a picture of him when he was happy, then one when he was mad.The crowd ate it up like you wouldn’t believe. He will be missed by us retro wrestling fans dearly.

I loved the Booger character. I used to love watching him throw little guys around then land a trip to the batcave. IP Mike.

Too bad he’s more well-known for the Booger character. His work as heel Makhan Singh in Calgary was one of the great heel runs in Canada.
