Former TNA Star and Others Begin Working with WWE Developmental

Posted by Marc Middleton on Friday, July 30th, 2010

Austin Watson, formerly TNA tag title co-holder Consequences Creed, debuted at the sold out FCW live event this Thursday. He was the tag partner of NXT’s Percy Watson in a losing effort against Donny Marlow & Brodus Clay.

There was also a segment hosted FCW Divas champ Naomi Night, who introduced the following five talents to the FCW Universe:

Rhys Ali – New Zealand’s Reon Mahima comes to FCW where he worked using his real name.

Shane Godwin – West Virginia’s Shane Canterbury is the son of Mark Canterbury. Mark is best known as former WWE tag champ Henry O. Godwin.

Phil Friedman – Is a former IFL MMA fighter turned wrestler. He has a classic wrestler look that reminds me of the legendary Joe LeDuc.

Fady The Arabian Bull – Hailing from Patterson, NJ and having Syrian heritage, Fady was a main eventer for New Jersey’s IWF.

Celeste – One of the newest divas signed by the WWE. Celeste was recruited out of Texas.

so, they (for now) let Shane Godwin use the Godwin name because of relation, but they make Hennig become “Michael McGillicuty” why?

in time, WWE will change HIS name to something stupid, too…

Since Godwin isn’t his real last name WWE could trademark it, which would stop him from using it in TNA or anywhere else. Also since WWE owns the rights to Henry Godwin’s name they can take credit for it.

But if he does make it to the main roster they’ll probably change it then anyway.

Then why run segments about hwo he is the sone of Curt Henning? That made ZERO sense to me… If your gonna promote him as his son, why in the world do you not have him wiht the same name?

Again, WWE just can’t seem to get out of its own way at this point.

And Randy Orton. And John Cena. And Dave Batista. And Brock Lesnar. And Kurt Angle. Plenty of former and current tops stars have been allowed to use their real names. Or in Orton’s case, specifically because of his lineage.

To NOT let Curt Hennig’s son use the Hennig family name, while allowing Rhodes and DiBiase and Natty Niedhart and D. H. Smith that privilege, is asinine. And the story they concocted, wherein it was “HIS” idea to change his name, to “stand out on his own”, yeah RIGHT. As if he WOULDN’T have wanted to represent his granddad and dad. Right.

The thing that puzzles me most is why they make wrestlers like Chavo, Rey and Ted drop the “junior” from their names . No one in WWE is allowed to use a Jr.

i thought the reason they changed the name of henning was because he wanted to make a name for himself… and not to be known as the son of a former wrestler.

I think everyone is missing the bigger picture with the last names. If Vince can make a star out of a wrestler and that wrestler is better known as a stage name, rather than his real name, he can have the rights to it (the stage name) and have a bigger hold over the potential star. Sure their are exceptions but if McGillicuty somehow becomes a big name…Vince can copywrite it. If he were to leave to say Tna, then they would have to market him as someone else, thus starting all over.

Michael Cole mentioned that the name McGillicuty is
Henning’s mother’s maiden name on NXT few weeks ago.
I’m not sure if it’s true or not but I still agree with
all of you guys about how i hate the name change on
    the second gen. stars.
We all know he’s Joe Henning. We all know Husky Harris
    is a Rotundo.
Kaval gets to mention his old name Low Ki on television
and how come the name Henning is never mentioned when
    McGillicuty’s talking?
Did you notice McGillicuty never used Curt Henning’s
trademark moves on NXT? He used it all the time on FCW
He even had to change his finisher which used to be a
    modified version of Perfectplex.
    I just don’t get it.
