The Truth: A New Leader

Posted by Jeff Long on Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

Okay, so initially this article was going to be my own version of the Ross Report, a few different things around the world of wrestling I found noteworthy to comment on but after watching Friday Night Smackdown a whole other issue came to mind.

There has been a lot of debate amongst wrestling fans, this site included as to whether or not there should or will be a new leader of Nexus. Now some of the people who read these articles like to point out that only this website has brought up the idea and there has never been any talk of having an established star take over the group. Myself and others would comment back that, despite there being no official talk on WWE programming about a new leader, that the idea of  8 rookies, who were just two weeks before the groups creation, were not only bickering and fighting amongst one another but doing everything they could just to ensure themselves of a spot on the main roster. So from that perspective alone, it’s hard to believe that these young men could have come together on anything, led alone a take over of epic porportions that would be required to make this angle believable without having a driving force behind the scenes.

This is where I come to the name CM Punk. After watching his interaction with the SES on Smackdown and how he took the lead on Nexus idea of win or you’re out, it all made perfect sense that Punk would be their new leader. He is clearly getting fed up with the SES and it’s only a matter of time before he sees the light and seeks a new group of followers. People have been talking about a leader of Nexus for weeks now and whether or not you think its in the works, having a leader and more specifically CM Punk is great for this storyline for a number of reasons. The very first is that it satisfies the desire of so many wrestling fans to see a big name at the helm of this group dying for leadership.  Secondly it gives us (critical/analytical) wrestling fans justification with the evolvement of this storyline and provides it with an aspect of credibility.  Thirdly and more importantly, you put a huge name and one of the best heels in the business at the head of one of the hungriest most dominant groups (yes they have been dominating) in recent history and it has the making for a potentially great feud.

All that aside this storyline idea does one more potentially great thing, and that is pitting CM Punk against John Cena. This is one of the few feuds between major stars we have yet to see and what better way than by putting Punk at the lead of the group that Cena is entrenched in a bitter feud with for the last few months.  Think about it, Punk is against everything immoral in society, how much material could he come up with on how John Cena and all his merchandise and propaganda are everything that is wrong with the WWE, how great would those promos come off. Just think about the emotions that this feud will create. You have an entire nation of Cena fans getting together despising this man insulting everything they love and on the other hand you have every anti-Cena fan (males 12 and up) getting behind Punk and his new army.

So not only does this feud pit two of the biggest stars in the industry together for the first time, with an already great built in history, breathes fresh life into a feud that needs to be reestablished with Nexus as a dominant threat, gives both credibility and excitement to one of the most talked about story lines in recent history. But if done properly and developed  in the right way, could culminate with a match between with who would be the biggest heel in the business against everyone s super hero, on the grandest stage of em all.

What a feud it would make, all it takes is a new leader.

But wasn’t Punk one of the first people Nexus attacked, during his match with Cena?
Sure they could probably make a story to cover this up or hope no-one remembers that far back, but I think if the Nexus are going to get a new established leader it will probably be someone who hasn’t been attacked yet.

my thoughts exactly. easy to dream. if there is a “leader” of Nexus, there will be a build to it. they aren’t just going to have one pop up out of no where. i will believe there is a leader when the build takes place.

Good point there should be a build, thats why i think it should be done slowly ultimately culminating at WM possibly for a title. More realistically if it does happen with WWE their build it would happen before the Rumble. Dan about the attack, if they were to do it, one simple sentence from Punk about the respect he gained for them addresses the issue but good point about the match.

The CM Punk angle would be interesting but I think the person to join nexus might have more authority in the wwe like a General Manager or triple H. I’m assuming someone ordered nexus to attack Vince.

Exactly KC, thats the entire point of the leader. it makes absolutely no sense for those young guys to attack the boss of the company without any provoking
