Here we are with our Extreme Rules predictions and thoughts! I’m joined this month by Jee-S and Mike Lightning with their very talented writing. Let’s get down to business!
Pre Show Match: The Miz vs Cody Rhodes
Jee-S: I expect Miz to win this. Cody Rhodes is on a losing streak and Miz is coming back from a movie; he needs the momentum big time. The WWE has never hesitated to make Miz look good but they seem to have troubles building Rhodes.
ML: Correct me if I’m wrong here, but isn’t this Miz’s THIRD pre-show match THIS year? He went from Main Eventing WrestleMania 27 to becoming the resident scapegoat for everything wrong with the company. Another thing wrong with this match is Cody Rhodes’ participation. Why are these two guys being relegated to the pre-show with ZERO build up and no feud? It makes no damn sense. Not to mention, The Miz’s booking is all over the map more than Carmen SanDiego. After a brief and mediocre feud with Wade Barrett for the IC Title, which he held for exactly one day before dropping it back to Barrett, he disappeared to film….what was it? Christmas Bounty? His booking has not been awesome.
Prediction: Cody Rhodes with help from Sandow to set-up a rematch at Payback.
JT: Rhodes and Miz are both too good to be on the pre-show, but here they are. I’m assuming they’ll make the most of their minutes, and I’m guessing Miz will pick up the win here coming off his return from filming his movies.
Extreme Rules Match: Randy Orton vs Big Show
Jee-S: Unless a major twist, I think Randy Orton is going to win this match. Big Show is getting older and Randy Orton is still in his prime; he needs the win more than Show does.
ML: Well, we knew that the Big Show was no longer going to be a part of the World Title or WWE Title pictures after he dropped the World Title to Alberto Del Rio. Neither him, nor his opponent, NEED another World Title run. Orton has become almost as stale as John Cena, I only say “almost” because he still hits rKo’s “from somewhere” time to time. This match has grown pretty physical since WrestleMania and it should come full circle with this match. I expect this match to be one of the more brutal matches on the card – though, I believe Orton’s “Extreme Rules” match with Kane last year was everything but extreme.
Prediction: Big Show setting up Orton-Show at Payback.
JT: The Miz referred to this match as one that we are all looking forward to, but I’m not sure how overly excited I am for this contest. I’m sure they’ll deliver something solid, but I just wish there was some potential prize coming for the winner of this match. Where will they go from here? I expect Orton to get the win, because that’s what he does.
Chris Jericho vs Fandango
Jee-S: I’m not quite sure about this one. I think Chris Jericho could definitely benefit from a pay-per-view win but then again so could Fandango. I think I’ll say Fandango just because the character has to build and he still needs to get over to properly establish himself as an important performer in the company.
ML: Jericho has continually put on high quality match after high quality match week in and week out since coming back to the WWE. His match with Fandango? Not so much. I’m hoping for a lot better match between these two this time around. Everyone knows my personal disdain for the Fandango gimmick, but there are elements I like: his aggression, cockiness and ability on the microphone are the three things I like the most. I’ve never been a fan of the man formerly known as Johnny Curtis but I continue to remain optimistic. I just want this match to be better than their WrestleMania 29 affair.
Prediction: Chris Jericho to set up the rubber match at Payback.
JT: Fan…dan…go! I’m not in love with the guy, but his popularity has soared and his aggressive style has impressed me. I see big things happening in the future for him. As for this match, it’s Jericho’s turn to get a big win, and I fully expect a third match to take place at Payback in June. Jericho comes out on top this time around to avenge his WrestleMania 29 loss.
Strap Match: Mark Henry vs Sheamus
Jee-S: Mark Henry. He has been impressive recently and he’s coming back from a huge WrestleMania win against the number one contender for the WWE Title. I expect Henry to win and to be the next in line for a shot at the belt.
ML: Here’s a match that intrigues me for the sheer brutality of it. Sheamus and Henry are both aggressive, mean SOBs and they love to brawl. After seeing the whipping that Henry put on Sheamus a few weeks back, I became enthralled with the idea of a strap match. It’s been awhile since we have seen one and Henry and Sheamus are perfect fits for this style of match. It’ll be interesting to see if they can make this as good as it can be or not.
Prediction: Sheamus to outsmart Henry while Henry is dragging him corner to corner(not very creative, but it’s the WWE)
JT: I’m actually looking forward to this match the MOST on the Extreme Rules card. I hated the match they had at Summerslam in 2011, but I like both of these men so much more now and their rivalry is far more interesting than it was then. I believe they will put together all around the most entertaining match on the card Sunday night. I want to predict Sheamus to get the obvious face win here, but something tells me WWE is going to continue pushing Mark Henry and make him look dominant once again in this one.
United States Championship: Kofi Kingston vs Dean Ambrose:
Jee-S: Dean Ambrose for sure. There’s not one wrestler or faction that has more hype and momentum than The Shield right now and the next step for them is gold. Dean Ambrose getting the U.S. Title is the first step. Also, Kofi Kingston’s reign hasn’t been hyped a lot so I expect him to be the transitional champion here.
ML: Throughout a majority of his singles career, Kofi has been nothing but a transitional champion. It’s really to bad too considering the high caliber of talent he brings to his matches. He is extremely talented and probably deserves at least one World Title reign. Ambrose has been nothing short of impressive and as leader of SHIELD has been booked to look nothing but strong. Ambrose is destined for big things in the WWE has is Rollins, in my opinion anyways. This match has the potential to steal the whole show if given enough time.
Prediction: Dean Ambrose to become the New United States Champion
JT: Does the Shield win all the gold this Sunday? Nope, because that would be too predictable. Will this be an excellent wrestling match? Yup. Will Kofi Kingston retain the gold for the time being? Yup.
Tornado Rules Tag Team Championship: Team Hell No vs Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns
Jee-S: Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns for the same reason as Dean Ambrose. The Shield has been built so strong, they can’t afford to lose these matches, especially for gold.
ML: With the Tornado Style rules implemented in this match, it adds nothing but more intrigue and excitement to it. If everyone remembers the amazing TLC Match that these four men participated in last year at the TLC PPV, they’ll understand why there’s so much excitement surrounding this match. Team Hell No has had a very entertaining and dysfunctional reign as Tag Champs and SHIELD has been nothing short of impressive. There’s been speculation for months of a Kane and Daniel Bryan split, and honestly, I’m still not quite sure if they’ll be splitting just yet.
Prediction: Rollins & Reigns to become New Tag Team Champions with ability to use the “Freebird” rule for their reign.
JT: Team Hell No has had the titles since Night of Champions in September. I’m predicting them to lose the belts here, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they retained. Rollins and Ambrose will get their first taste of WWE gold in this match.
I Quit Match: Jack Swagger vs Alberto Del Rio
Jee-S: Alberto Del Rio. He is the babyface to go against Ziggler and Swagger’s shtick has lasted too long, it seems as though everyone’s pretty tired of him already. Del Rio also has a winning streak going on; he is the favorite to win this match.
ML: If the rumors are true about the triple threat match involving Dolph Ziggler being a possibility for SummerSlam, why even have this match? I know it’s made to keep Del Rio and Swagger on the card but with Payback and Money in the Bank PPVs before SummerSlam, this match seems a little redundant. I would have preferred this match to not have the “Number One Contender” stipulation and just push the World Title Ladder Match to Payback. It’ll be interesting to see how exactly this match goes and hopefully it these two out on the performances they SHOULD have had at WrestleMania.
Prediction: Jack Swagger because of the theme of the Payback PPV and the fact that he was responsible for Ziggler’s concussion.
JT: This won’t be as good as the ladder match with Ziggler would have been, but I do expect this to surpass their somewhat average WrestleMania bout. I expect Del Rio to find a way to force Jack Swagger to give up. The only way Del Rio quits here is if somebody threatens to hurt Ricardo unless Del Rio says those dreaded words.
Steel Cage Match: Triple H vs Brock Lesnar
Jee-S: I’ll go with Lesnar. I don’t expect Triple H to be still wrestling after Extreme Rules but Lesnar has a contract that makes him still tied to the company after this match. He needs the win more than Triple H needs it.
ML: I know I have been very harsh when it comes to these two and this trilogy of matches but I just can’t help myself. Even with as personal and heated that they have tried to make this, I simply have no interest. Their match was WrestleMania 29 was definitely better than their SummerSlam match from the year previous but it still wasn’t spectacular. With Lesnar signing a two year deal prior to WrestleMania this year and The Rock’s recent comments about possibly wrestling his last match, it’ll be interesting to see what they have for Lesnar left after this match. Lesnar’s booking has been extremely questionable and makes one scratch their head.
Prediction: Brock Lesnar which will force Triple H to “retire” AGAIN and move Lesnar’s record to 2-2(?) since returning.
JT: A lot of people aren’t happy with Triple H being in the main event of any show at this point in his career, but I’m very much okay with it. These guys are going to destroy each other the way two people are meant to inside a steel cage. Who can complain about that? It makes sense for Lesnar to win this match and appear dominant heading into the summer months, but I don’t know that WWE is going for what makes sense anymore. I’ll predict Lesnar, but I believe creative booking could go either way with it.
WWE Championship Last Man Standing Match: John Cena vs Ryback
Jee-S: The Almighty Cena. It’s too soon to take the title away from him already, and it’s sad to say because Ryback hasn’t won a serious pay-per-view match since…well, ever (I don’t consider squash matches serious). Unless there’s something we can’t predict, I expect Cena to overcome all the odds once again and win this match.
ML: WWE Logic says: “Who can we have Cena face at Extreme Rules that will make people believe that he could actually lose the WWE Championship?” Answer is……Ryback? You mean the guys who challenged for the WWE Title three times already and lost. The same guy who took the pinfall at Elimination Chamber and lost to Mark Henry at WrestleMania 29? The same guy who was eliminated by John Cena in the Royal Rumble that gave Cena the win? The same guy who hasn’t won on a PPV card since Money in the Bank last year? Seems legit. This is another head scratcher of a booking move by the WWE. Though, Ryback has had some quality matches as of late, he still has a long way to go to win any type of support from me. He reminds too much of Goldberg.
Prediction: Clark Ken….err….Superma….errr…John Cena to retain the WWE Championship which, will inevitably, set up another WWE Title with Ryback at Payback.
JT: I’m hoping Cena and Ryback put together something special here. A lot of people doubt the abilities of either man to carry a match, but I’m optimistic that together they can put together a very competitive brawl. I’m picking Cena to retain the title for now, but Ryback will probably destroy him once the match is over.
ML: This card has loads of potential to be better than WrestleMania 29 as was the case last year. I like the fact the WWE didn’t book this entire card of simply WrestleMania rematches as there’s only two on the card. Wade Barrett and Antonio Cesaro(AGAIN) missing from this card bothers me to no end, though. This card isn’t one of the major four, yet the card is chalked full of “seasoned” veterans and older wrestlers. Also, the matches on this card look to be a preview for three or four potential matches on the Payback PPV. As for the younger talent with SHIELD, Fandango and Ryback, they need to deliver to prove to the WWE that the younger talent can handle it. I hope the WWE management eventually wakes up, and wakes up soon. Overall, I’m very interested and have high hopes this card can deliver.
JT: I’ve been excited for this card for a couple weeks now. WWE has done a very good job of hyping the rivalries and developing a strong selection of matches. I see this one turning out to be fantastic! Thanks for checking out our preview!
